Billy Charles Jr., will become Galena’s new police chief on March 1, 2016 after being unanimously confirmed this week by the Galena City Council. Mayor Dale Oglesby appointed Charles to the position.
Charles, who has been the administrator at the Cherokee County Jail for 11 years, will succeed Larry Delmont, who is retiring. Delmont became police chief in 2006.
According to Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves, as administrator Charles helped introduce digital fingerprinting and is currently working on a new records management system.
Billy Charles previously worked at the Labette Correctional Conservation Camp in Oswego, served in the U.S. Army for 23 years and is husband of Galena City Clerk Flora ‘Renee’ Charles.
