Galena Fire Department
Since 1877, Galena and the surrounding area have relied on volunteers for fire protection. The first fire equipment consisting of buckets and hand-pulled hose carts evolved into a horse-drawn fire apparatus and then to motorized equipment. Presently, the fire department is equipped with modern equipment that is constantly being updated. Still, the manpower has always been supplied by a group of dedicated individuals.
Today, the Galena Fire Department consists of up to 30 members, ready, willing, and able to respond to any emergency that may arise. They are notified by personal pager and two-way radios.
The City of Galena maintains the salary of a full-time driver and two relief drivers. The City also budgets enough money each year to cover the many expenses necessary to maintain a fire department.
The Galena Fire Department maintains a fire station in Riverton, KS that is currently designated as non-manned, although one of our firefighters lives there and is able to respond with our Riverton-area firefighters.
Volunteer firefighters also raise money to further improve the facilities, update equipment, and cover the expenses of the organization.
