Sergeant Barry L. Smith began his career in law enforcement in 1986 at the Baxter Springs Police Department. He rose to the rank of Sergeant and did case investigations. Sergeant Smith was active with several other investigative organizations and was one of the original investigators of the Tri-State Major Case Squad which still operates today in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. In 1996 Sergeant Smith began working with the Pittsburg State University Police Department and also attended full time college classes which rewarded him with a Bachelor’s of Science in Sociology with an emphasis in Criminology. Along with this degree Sergeant Smith achieved a minor in Business Administration. In 2012 Sergeant Smith began working with the Galena Police Department and presently is a Sergeant Investigator and conducts case investigations for all crimes.

Sergeant Smith is a 1986 graduate of the 92nd class at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Academy in Hutchinson, Kansas. He has specialized training in Crime Scene Processing, Crime Scene Photography, Advanced interviewing and interrogation, narcotics investigations, death scene investigation, online and computer Investigations, Arson Investigations and Major Case Task Force Training. Sergeant Smith has had certifications to be a Range Master, Expandable Baton instructor, School Resource Officer, Intoxilyzer operator and a college degree to be a Social Scientist. Sergeant Smith is also a member of the Kansas Peace Officers Association and the Tri-State Major Case Squad.
