Arrest Warrant Served at Galena Residence

As a result of an investigation into alleged sexual misconduct with a child; On Friday April 3, 2020, Officers with the Galena Police Department served an arrest warrant at 2125 S. Main Galena, KS.

73-Year-old Carl E. Combs of the residence was taken into custody and transported to the Cherokee County Jail. Combs is Charged through the Cherokee County District Court with four (4) counts of Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child.

He is being held on a $100,000.00 bond.

City Hall Closure

Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic the following changes are in affect effective March 16, 2020:

The Galena City Building and the Galena Public Library will be closed to the public. If you need to pay your water bill, or conduct other city business, please proceed to the drive thru from 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday. We can also be reached at 620-783-5265 or visit www.galenaks.gov.

If you need to speak to the Court Clerk, you can enter through the north east door between the hours of 8:00am through 4:30pm or by calling 620-783-2454. Review Court will be 8:30am May 1st, 2020. Next Court Date is May 08, 2020 at 1:30pm. All probation has been moved to May 12, 2020 at 5:30pm.

If you need to speak with an officer, you can enter through the north east door between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm Monday through Friday. For after hours and weekends, you can call 620-783-5065 or 620-429-3992. In an emergency call 911.

The City Buildings including Galena Public Library, Senior Citizen Building, and Galena Community Room will also be closed for 30 days. Schermerhorn Park and Galena Ballfields will also be closed for 30 days. No meetings, games, gatherings or practices.

Ordinance No. 20-04

During the February 03, 2020 regular City Council Meeting Ordinance 20-04 was approved to allow the assessment of the costs to collect debts owed to the City of Galena, Kansas.

Ordinance No. 20-04 AN ORDINANCE ALLOWING THE ASSESSMENT OF THE COSTS TO COLLECT DEBTS OWED TO THE CITY OF GALENA, KANSAS

Be it ordained by the Governing Body of the City of Galena, Kansas:

Section 1. Every citizen/debtor shall pay any and all charges related to the reasonable costs of collection of any fine/fee/ costs of services, as well as any costs/ assessments for clean-up of the property for a municipal violation that is the violation that is the issue herein. This specifically applies to, but not limited to, charges for water, electricity, property code violation fines, parking tickets, municipal court fines, fees, court costs, interest accrued thereon, and any other debt due and owing to the municipality. The cost of collection include, but are not limited to, court costs, surcharges, attorney fees, and collection agency fee, except that such costs of collection may not include both attorney fees and collection agency fees.

Section 2. The ordinance shall take effect and be in full force from and after its publication in the official city newspaper.

Increased Enforcement Around the Galena High School – February 24 thru March 6

The Galena Police Department will join other law enforcement agencies in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma with increased enforcement near high schools to raise awareness on roadway safety. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens (15-18 years old) in the United States – ahead of all other types of injury, disease or violence.

“Even one teen death is unacceptable,”. “Please slow down, put the phone away or turn it off, and always buckle up.”

Officers will issue citations to any individual who refuses to obey the traffic laws, whether it is for speeding, texting or failing to buckle up. Remind teens that driving is a privilege and encourage them to learn about the importance of driving safely.

The City of Galena, KS is looking for professional, self-motivated, community oriented, individuals to apply for Police Officer positions.

SALARY:  Depending on Qualifications / Experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Applicants must be 21 years of age, a United States Citizen, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and good moral character.  Applicant cannot have felony or domestic violence arrests. Law Enforcement certified preferred but not mandatory.

Traffic Stop leads to Drug Arrest

On January 8, 2020 at approximately 8:00 pm; Officers with the Galena Police Department conducted a traffic stop as part of an ongoing drug investigation. During the traffic stop officers discovered suspected methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.

The driver of the vehicle, 58-year-old Steven W. Davis, of Galena, KS was taken into custody and transported to the Cherokee County Jail. Charges are being submitted for Unlawful possession of Methamphetamine, Felony possession of drug paraphernalia, Possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, Possession of drug paraphernalia used to distribute a controlled substance, and Possession of Marijuana.

Davis is remains in the Cherokee County Jail and is being held on $33,500.00 bond.

Visit Whoville at City Hall

Galena Christmas Parade will be this Saturday, December 7th, at 4:00 PM. Christmas Tree lighting ceremony at City Hall will follow the parade. Everyone is welcome to come visit Whoville during the ceremony. Bring your cameras and take Max for a spin.
