Please note that Solid Waste collection originally scheduled for Monday, October 12, will instead take place on Tuesday, October 13, alongside the regular Tuesday collection route.

Notice of Public Hearing

Notice is hereby given that the Governing Body of the City of Galena, Kansas, will conduct a public hearing to consider a request for a tax abatement for US Iridium LLC, concerning property located at:

820 S. Main Street
Galena, Kansas

The public hearing will be held on:

Monday, November 2, 2026
6:00 p.m.

The hearing will take place in the:

Galena City Council Chamber
211 W. 7th Street
Galena, Kansas 66739

The purpose of the public hearing is to provide members of the public an opportunity to be heard regarding the proposed tax abatement for US Iridium LLC and the property located at 820 S. Main Street.

All interested persons are invited to attend the public hearing and provide comments concerning the proposed tax abatement. Written comments may also be submitted to the City of Galena City Clerk prior to the public hearing.

BRUSH PILE BURNING NOTICE

The City of Galena Public Works Team will begin burning the City’s brush pile today.

Residents in the surrounding area may notice smoke or a smoky smell while the brush pile is being burned. Please don’t be alarmed—this is planned work being conducted by the City of Galena Public Works Department.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as our Public Works Team works to safely clear and maintain the City’s brush area.

Now accepting applications for Chief of Police – Galena Police Department

The Galena Kansas Police Department is seeking a highly motivated individual with a desire to serve our community as the next Chief of Police. Galena is in Cherokee County in the southeast corner of Kansas bordering Missouri. The City of Galena offers a strong benefit package that includes 100% coverage for individual health and dental care. Retirement is currently through KPERS.

The Chief of Police position is a salary position based on qualifications. All uniforms and equipment, including take home vehicle are provided, with a mild call volume of 2,400 per year. Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five (5) years experience as a sworn police officer is preferred. Candidates must satisfy all state requirements as set forth in K.S.A. 74-5605 or certification by reciprocity. Applicants must have a valid drivers license.

Notice of RNR and Budget Hearing 2027

The governing body of Galena will meet on September 8, 2026 at 6:00 pm at City Hall for the purpose of hearing and answering objections of taxpayers relating to the proposed use of all funds and the amount of ad valorem tax. Detailed budget information is available at City Clerk’s office and will be available at the hearing.

You can conveniently pay your utility bill online by visiting https://galenaks.gov and selecting the online bill pay option. You must have your full account number and pin that is located on your new bill.
