CODE ENFORCEMENT PROCESS: Protecting our community through code enforcement
The City of Galena’s City Code establishes the form and functions of city government. One of those functions is the inspection and enforcement of nuisance codes related to the health, safety, and welfare of persons and property within the city limits of Galena. Many of these protective duties relative to property maintenance are the responsibility of the city’s Code Enforcement.
Code Enforcement observes, receives, and investigates complaints and then makes a determination if a code violation exists. When such a violation exists, a variety of measures may be taken to insure corrective actions are undertaken.
FILING A COMPLAINT
Nuisance complaints are received and processed in person, by telephone, or via email on the City of Galena website. The Code Enforcement Office is located in the City Clerk’s Office. The number to call is (620) 783-1900.
AFTER THE COMPLAINT IS RECEIVED
All complaints received are investigated within 24 to 48 hours by the city’s Code Enforcement Officer or referred to the appropriate agency within the city organization.
If the city inspector determines a nuisance exists, a Notice of Violation from the City of Galena’s Code Enforcement Officer will be sent to the renter (occupant) and property owner. If the property is vacant, it will be posted with a Notice of Violation.
IF YOU DO NOT COMPLY
In the event a responsible party does not comply with the city’s request to abate a violation, a summons will be issued and the responsible party will be required to appear in Municipal Court. A fine and court costs may be levied in addition to having to abate the violation.
